Something Will Turn Up is a rags to better quality rags story of a man trying to make it in the music business. Apart from following the extraordinary journey of one of the most persevering musician/composers of all time, it is also an amusing anthology which traces the extraordinary changes the music business has undergone over the last thirty years. Unlike most show business autobiographies it is shown from the point of view of a working freelance musician rather than a rock star or record company executive.
The story begins in 1967 after an abortive attempt to enter a talent contest, results in Nemo's passionate desire to embark on a career in music. In 1970 he achieves his greatest ambition by turning professional and soon establishes himself as a successful freelance guitarist. In his second year, after turning down an offer from a then unknown band called Genesis, he joins a pop group and tours the American Military bases in Germany. The tour ends in disaster. A few months later he joins one of Europe's top jet set bands, starting with a winter residency in Gstaad, Switzerland and going on to play for a multitude of rich and famous celebrities.
In 1975 he marries Mary and six months later they immigrate to South Africa where he becomes the top session guitarist. Eighteen months later, after a nervous breakdown caused by overwork, Mary’s miscarriage, a near divorce and a brush with death at a mine dance, he and Mary return to England.
He writes and records his first album but despite being highly acclaimed by music industry executives he is unable to get a record deal. There follows a series of near misses which results in disillusionment and crippling debt.
In 1979, they become seriously addicted to squash (the sport not the vegetable) and both go on to play for their county. Despite a high income as a session musician, the debt caused by recording and promoting his own music becomes so great that they decide to do what everyone dreams of doing... they left their jobs, sold up and went abroad looking for adventure. During their travels, Nemo continues to compose but following a failed attempt at self publishing, they return to England penniless.
After a few months of absurd (but amusing) business ventures and a narrow escape from bankruptcy they take on the lease of a large squash club in Derby. He develops the club extensively, doing all the building work himself and it becomes a fantastic success. In 1987 he diversifies by building a large restaurant but one week after the opening, he and Mary split up in the most unusual of circumstances. During the break-up he is surprised to find his great love for music returning.
The restaurant is a disaster and once again they hover on the brink of bankruptcy. Nemo develops his interest in writing and moves to Los Angeles where he completes his first screenplay. An option and advance is given by a film company but the movie is never made. A riches to rags year includes some amusing episodes as he plays the hysterical Los Angeles dating game. After returning to England with no money he becomes increasingly involved with music and discovers his ability to write songs has improved dramatically during his five year lay off. He devotes himself entirely to song writing but although his songs and musicianship are widely acknowledged as being exceptional, the music business has become such a closed shop that it proves impossible to break the cartel.
In 1990, six months after his return to England, he meets and falls in love with FEDERIKA, a beautiful Croatian woman, brought up in Peru. She is a very talented painter and a direct descendant of the famous Glavich Family from Dubrovnik, the richest family in Yugoslavia before the communists seized power in 1945 and reduced them to poverty. There is a brief account of Federika's extraordinary family history including their experiences during the recent war in Croatia. Whilst on holiday in 1995, Federika herself has to escape with her children from a Serbian bombardment.
Nemo continues to write songs but being unable to make a living in England he is forced to spend the next few fears working as a solo entertainer in five start hotels all over the world. He returns to England for a few months at a time but finds it harder and harder to leave Federika. In 1996, knowing he has come to a watershed in his life, he decides to write down everything that has happened to him before going any further. For eighteen months he works hard on his book whilst still working as an entertainer but after a terrifying three months contract in Beirut, he can no longer face working as a bar entertainer. The book is his last chance of achieving the success that he has spent thirty years striving for.
Despite a great deal of interest from publishers it is their opinion that it is impossible to market a book by an unknown singer songwriter and so it is never published.
